Lot size and stop loss distance are inseparable inputs in the position sizing formula. You cannot determine the correct lot size without knowing the stop distance for the specific trade, and you cannot place a meaningful stop without knowing what dollar risk that distance creates at your intended lot size. Traders who select lot size before placing their stop on the chart are working backwards — they are implicitly setting their risk exposure before measuring the trade's risk structure.

The correct workflow is always: (1) Identify your entry from chart analysis. (2) Place stop at the technically correct level — the price where the trade idea is wrong. (3) Measure the stop distance in pips. (4) Run the lot size calculation using that specific pip distance and your account's dollar risk budget. (5) Enter the resulting lot size in the order ticket. Only then does step 2's stop placement have a defined dollar meaning.

A practical example shows why order matters: You plan to trade EUR/USD long. You decide "I'll use 0.3 lots." Then you look for a stop. A technically correct stop is 45 pips away: dollar risk = 45 × $3 = $135. Another valid stop is 12 pips away: dollar risk = 12 × $3 = $36. The "right" stop for your chart analysis is 45 pips — but starting with a lot size instead of a risk budget means you have already committed to a risk level before evaluating the trade. Reverse the process: budget $100, then calculate that 0.22 lots (rounded down) is correct for the 45-pip stop.

Lot Sizing Mistakes That Blow Undercapitalized Accounts
